Outback
While Australia is a massive country, almost the size of the US, nearly 40% of it is desert. Most Australians choose to live on or near the coast, but there's a brave few who manage to survive in one of the most arid, snake infested, as far from 'normal' civilization as possible places in the whole world. Red sand, scorching daytime temps, and wondering every step whether you're going to run into a snake, this place is as foreign as you could possibly imagine. But once you settle down, take a moment to appreciate the calmness of nature and the vast peaceful emptiness, you really begin to envy those fortunate enough to call this red world home.

Travel
Driving in the Outback while blasting music is such an underrated feeling- sing as loud as you want cause there's no one else on the road (just remember to stay on the left side of the road!!)

Bucket List Cross Off
Have Done:
Riding a camel while watching the sun rise above Uluru
Would Love to Do:
If I go back I'd love to do a desert road trip

Night Time
See the entire galaxy open up at night- there's no light pollution to get in the way.
Obviously, all the stars are different from the ones back in New York too, so you can stare up the vast open sky night.

Memories
01.
Driving in the Outback
Being in the middle of nowhere has lots of perks, and one of the best is you've largely got the road to yourself. As someone who loves a scenic drive, the road to Uluru certainly delivers. Flying by red rocks and tall grass, watching the monolith that is Uluru grow bigger and bigger, you can blast the music as loud as you want and no one but the dingoes will hear you howl along. Just remember to stay on the left side of the road.

03.
Riding a Camel in the Desert
Any proper visit to the desert should include the chance to ride as part of a camel caravan. These beasts may be smelly, wobbly, and spit, but there's nothing quite like the rhythm of a camel trekking through the dirt. Experiencing the sunrise in the desert is a beautiful phenomenon in and of itself, but to do so in a such a unique way as on the back of a camel, donning your cape and hat, is truly an unforgettable feat.

02.
Watching the Stars
This might be among my favorite experiences in all of Australia. With civilization far in the rear view mirror, standing in the desert at night is as jaw-droppingly beautiful as it is chillingly spiritual. Listening to the crickets chirp, the wind brushing the grass beside you, embracing the entire galaxy above your head... you feel infinitely small, and yet, incredibly special to be here. Here, even an hour amongst the stars feels like an eternity.
